Web 2.0 can lead to SME 'innovation'

Web 2.0 platforms such as Facebook can have positive effects on the UK's small business sector, according to new research.

An investigation by the think tank Demos - commissioned by telecoms group Orange - found that online social networking tools can lead to higher productivity in employees.

What's more, Facebook and other similar platforms can be used to encourage better colleague relations and to keep in touch with former staff members.

Robert Ainger, a representative for Orange, noted: "It seems clear that the economic significance of networks will continue to grow."

"Nurturing and hosting networks can bring benefits in the terms of productivity, innovation and workplace democracy."

He added that social networking can contribute to organisational resilience - a vital attribute during challenging economic conditions.

Research published by foreign exchange experts World First earlier this week showed that the small business sector loses £900 million on the currency markets every year.
